Mostly of the full-time soprano saxophonists in jazz, Jane Ira Bloom can be recognized as probably one of the most accomplished. Without an avant-gardist by itself, Bloom functions on the forwards edge from the mainstream. Compositionally her music attracts intensely on traditional jazz precepts of golf swing and tonality/modality, however her idea of type and structure is fairly personal; general her music bears the stamp of a person thinker. Bloom started playing music around age 12. She went to Yale School as an undergraduate, Yale College of Music for graduate research, and examined privately at Berklee University of Music with Joe Viola. She shifted to NY in the past due ’70s and researched with a previous Kilometers Davis sideman, the saxophonist George Coleman. Bloom shaped her personal label (Format) and started recording her personal albums; pianist Fred Hersch was a regular collaborator.
