Theo Jörgensmann

German clarinetist/composer Theo Jörgensmann is among the most advanced contemporary free improvisers in his instrument, merging moody chamber jazz with tips of the modal hard bop sensibility. Delivered in 1948, Jörgensmann produced his initial recordings in the past due ’70s, including 1978’s quintet outing JUST DO IT Clarinet and 1979’s quartet Track of Vowage, both released on CMP. Through the past due ’80s and early ’90s, he used the experimental Dutch big music group Contraband, and in addition led an organization known as the Werkschau Outfit, which presented violinist Albrecht Maurer and percussionist Achim Krämer; they documented an recording for Konnex in 1993, Aesthetic Direction. Jörgensmann following formed a normal quartet offering vibist Christopher Dell, bassist Christian Ramond, and drummer Klaus Kugel, which would play a significant role in getting Jörgensmann’s music to the eye of the worldwide improvised-music community. Their 1st recording, Ta Eko Mo, was documented for Z.o.o. in 1997 and released to reviews that are positive; the following 12 months, the quartet caused veteran trumpeter Kenny Wheeler. 1999 was a breakout 12 months: the quartet’s first recording for hatOLOGY, Snijbloemen, garnered Jörgensmann his widest acknowledgement yet, and once again received overwhelmingly complimentary evaluations. Jörgensmann toured THE UNITED STATES along with his quartet, playing the Du Maurier Event in Vancouver as well as the Montreal Jazz Event that 12 months; he also documented two albums with poet Michael Klaus. Jörgensmann’s following task was a cooperation with bass clarinetist Eckard Koltermann; teamed because the German Clarinetduo, they released Pagine Gialle on hatOLOGY in 2001.
