Lionel Newman

While still an adolescent, Connecticut-born musician Lionel Newman secured a conductor’s work using the Los Angeles-based Earl Carroll’s Vanities. For quite some time thereafter, he was the accompanist for Mae Western. Hired mainly because rehearsal pianist at 20th Century-Fox in 1943, Newman spent another four years at that studio room, employed in such capacities mainly because conductor, composer, arranger and musical supervisor. The receiver of eleven Oscar nominations, Newman was finally honored using the precious metal statuette for his credit scoring of 1969’s Hello Dolly. His last display screen project was 1984’s Unfaithfully Yours, a remake of 1 from the few Fox movies from the 1940s that he didn’t focus on. Lionel Newman was the sibling of composer Alfred Newman as well as the uncle of musician Randy Newman.
