Mickey Tucker

Because the ’60s Mickey Tucker has graced hard bop recordings by such players as Junior Cook, James Moody, Frank Foster, Louis Hayes, among others. Mainly a pianist, Tucker in addition has performed on body organ, notably with Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Tucker started playing piano around age six. Knowledge playing in cathedral as a young child inspired his musical idea. Within the middle-’60s he supported non-jazz acts Small Anthony & the Imperials, R&B vocalist Damita Jo, and comedian Timmy Rogers. His jazz profession took off from the past due ’60s. From 1969 to 1975 he documented and/or toured using the saxophonists Moody, Kirk, and Eric Kloss; the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, drummer Roy Brooks, vocalist Eddie Jefferson, as well as the group Last Model. Tucker was also present on many George Benson recordings dating from the first ’70s prior to the guitarist discontinued straight-ahead jazz. In 1976 Tucker used Kloss and Jefferson. He also toured European countries with Artwork Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, offering because the group’s musical movie director. In the past due ’70s he documented with Make, Philly Joe Jones, and Billy Harper, amongst others. Within the ’80s Tucker documented with flügelhornist Artwork Farmer and tenor saxophonist Benny Golson’s Jazztet, alto saxophonists Richie Cole and Phil Woods, and drummer Louis Hayes, amongst others. He continued to be mixed up in ’90s, using Make, the Jazztet, and saxophonist Bob Ackerman, among others. Tucker is really a musician’s musician — not really popular to the general public most importantly but highly reputed by his fellow jazz players. Although the majority of his documented work continues to be being a sideman, he provides occasionally documented being a leader, you start with the 1975 record Triplicity in the Xanadu label.
