United Empire Loyalists

2 hundred copies? That was the full total quantity of pressings of “No, No, No,” UEL’s single single launch (circa 1968). From your outset, UEL’s group of fans was limited — just a few hundred of Vancouver, BC’s enlightened teenagers had have you ever heard of this music group — before Vancouver Record Collector’s Association rescued them from total oblivion, offering UEL around the 1983 anthology Background of Vancouver Stone, Quantity 3. The group contains Rick Enns (lead vocals, bass), Anton “Tom” Kolstey (lead acoustic guitar), Jeff Ridley (tempo electric guitar), and Glen Hendrickson (drums). Enns was a previous person in the Tom Northcott Trio; Hendrickson also pounded the skins for Mock Duck and Orville Dorp. “No, No, No,” using its complicated but catchy electric guitar hook, was in fact a vintage Willie Cobb blues tune entitled “YOU DO NOT Like Me.” The music group appropriated it from Jerry Garcia and his mates — having supported the Grateful Deceased on several occasion. UEL had been known because of their expanded free-form jam periods a la Cream and A DECADE After. An hour-long studio room functionality was filmed with the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Company) in 1968 within the Organization tv series (dropped within a dusty vault someplace?). Barring its rediscovery, UEL will stay more star than reality.
