Hank Levy

A significant arranger, Hank Levy is best-known for his longtime association with Stan Kenton’s Orchestra. He researched music at a number of different establishments (the U.S. Navy College of Music, the faculty of William & Mary, Peabody Conservatory, the Catholic College or university of America, and Towson Condition College or university), and in early stages developed an extremely original arranging design. Levy first began composing for Kenton in 1953 and down the road had written for Sal Salvador (1960-1962), Don Ellis (within the mid-’60s), as well as for the studios. A specialist at composing in advanced period signatures (that was a significant asset with Ellis’ music group as could be noticed on Live at Monterey), Levy became a significant power in Stan Kenton’s jazz workshops. Hank Levy, who was simply among Kenton’s key arrangers during his last decade, continues to be a significant jazz educator (including at City State) because the past due ’60s, and a solid (if unsung) impact on today’s arrangers.
