Dave MacKay

Long a fixture in Southern California, pianist Dave MacKay’s playing is grounded in bop and really difficult bop, but he frequently takes extremely adventurous solos. Blind from an early on age, MacKay went to Trinity University from 1950-1954 and Boston School from 1956-1958, and he also examined with Lennie Tristano. Whilst in Boston, MacKay used many top music artists including Serge Chaloff, Sonny Stitt, Bob Wilber, and Bobby Hackett. Over time in NY (leading his very own groups but additionally dealing with Jim Hall), MacKay spent a time in Chicago and settled in LA. He was using the Don Ellis Orchestra from 1966-1967, caused Emil Richards, acquired his very own group in the past due ’60s (including his past due wife, vocalist Vicky Hamilton), and eventually used Shelly Manne, Chet Baker, Joe Move, Costs Henderson, Lori Bell, and Stephanie Haynes. MacKay, that has led albums for Impulse!, Studio room 7, Breakthrough, MAMA, YOU WILL WANT TO, Webster’s Last Phrase, and God Today, has worked frequently in the LA area in to the new millennium.
