After going their separate ways following a restructuring of Guided by Voices, Robert Pollard and Tobin Sprout continued to create music at their usual, frenetically prolific pace. Pollard held up his inhuman saving and touring plan, and Sprout relocated to Michigan, liberating numerous single albums, painting, and starting a skill gallery. Both remained friends actually after their band’s vitriolic meltdown, and rumours of the reunion task persisted, perpetuated by legions of GBV supporters ravenous for brand-new materials. In August of 2001, the supporters’ prayers had been answered by means of Airport terminal 5, the very first task Pollard and Sprout acquired done in tandem since 1996. The music for the Airport terminal 5 task were documented long-distance; Sprout, playing all of the instruments himself, constructed and documented the music in Northport, MI. He delivered the tapes to Pollard, who subsequently composed the lyrics, and documented the vocals in Dayton, OH, with engineer and pseudonymous GBV collaborator Johnny Unusual (aka John Shough) at his famous Cro-Magnon studios. Prior to the recording proper strike the racks, two 7″ singles, each in pressings of just one 1,000 and in conjunction with outtakes through the LP sessions, had been concurrently released. The enthusiasts reacted per expectation — the complete editions of both singles sold-out within times. The duo’s full-length, Tower within the Fountain of Sparks, premiered in past due August of the same yr.
