William Warfield

b. 22 January 1920, Western world Helena, Arkansas, USA, d. 25 August 2002, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Elevated in Rochester, NY, as a kid Warfield studied performing extensively, including gaining a qualification at Eastman University of Music. After portion in military cleverness in World Battle II (he was fluent in German) he guaranteed a role within a touring firm of Contact Me Mister, which acquired premiered on Broadway in 1946. Also in the street firm had been showbusiness hopefuls Pal Hackett, Carl Reiner and Bob Fosse. Warfield proved helpful thereafter in musical displays, occasionally in movies and on tv, and in opera, but chiefly he performed in the concert system. His liquid and resonant baritone was adjustable to many styles and he became an achieved vocalist of gospel music and specifically of German lieder. Warfield’s concert recital debut emerged in 1950 at New York’s City Hall. This is followed by an extremely effective tour of Australia, and he visited Hollywood for Jerome Kern’s Present Sail boat (1951), memorably performing ‘Ol’ Guy River’. In 1952 he starred as Porgy in circumstances Department-sponsored touring edition of Porgy And Bess that included 142 shows in London. Starring contrary him was opera vocalist Leontyne Cost, whom he wedded. On tv he made an appearance as De Lawd within a creation of Marc Connelly’s The Green Pastures (1957 and 1959). Receiver of numerous honours and honours, Warfield gained a Grammy award within the Spoken Phrase category for his contribution as narrator to Aaron Copland’s A Lincoln Family portrait (1984). Among his last performances had been a recital in 1995 at Carnegie Hall to get the Duke Ellington Cancers Middle, and in 1999 a nationwide tour executing African-American Folk Music with fellow baritones Benjamin Matthews and Robert Sims. Warfield was also deeply involved with education, notably on the Schiller Institute where he done the Country wide Conservatory of Music Motion.
