Manufacturer Jacques Morali in 1977 set up a group made to get gay viewers while parodying (some stated exploiting) that same constituency’s stereotypes. Songwriters Phil Hurtt and Peter Whitehead had been tabbed to compose music with homosexual underpinnings, and assignments and costumes had been carefully selected; included in this had been a cowboy, biker, soldier, policeman, and structure worker filled with hard head wear. The group clicked initial in England using the one “SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA (YOU HAVE Me)” in 1977, after that reaped stateside honors with “Macho Man” in 1978. “Y.M.C.A.” and “In the Navy” had been world-wide smashes, both peaking at number 2 over the pop graphs.
