The Prisoners

This mod-influenced 60s revival band comes from the UK’s Medway Valley in Kent. Main songwriter Graham Day time (acoustic guitar/vocals), Allan Crockford (bass), Wayne Taylor (Hammond body organ) and Johnny Symons (drums) surfaced in 1982 having a tough and raucous debut, A Flavor Of Pink, independently Up label. A agreement using the Ace Information subsidiary Big Defeat yielded The Wisermiserdemelza in 1983, an even more laid-back, regarded as work that ranged from effective, 60s-affected rock (the solitary ‘Hurricane’) to tranquil ballads. The EP Electric powered Fit adopted in 1984 and was significant for the wonderful ‘Melanie’. The music group was presented on UK tv’s The Pipe with additional Big Beat functions, celebrated around the EP Four On Four: Garbage On The Pipe, the Prisoners adding the amazing ‘Achieving My Mind’. The music group was unhappy using the sound on the second recording and returned to possess Up for 1985’s THE FINAL Fourfathers, a much less slick creation, but a far more adult offering. It had been enough to protected a recording agreement with Stiff Information /Countdown, but right away relations between music group and label had been poor. Although In FROM YOUR Cold was an extraordinary album, it had been much poppier and cleaner compared to the Prisoners experienced wished. Preceded by ‘Whenever I’m Eliminated’ (a re-recording from your Last Fourfathers), the recording was badly advertised and the music group, disillusioned with proceedings, divide soon afterwards. Apart from two live albums distributed to the Milkshakes, an record’s worthy of of rarities was also released. Regarding the Prisoners themselves, Taylor carved out a distinct segment along with his originally Booker T. Jones -inspired, and afterwards rare groove-inspired, Adam Taylor Quartet. Crockford became a member of him for some time before reuniting with Graham Time (after his spell with Milkshakes offshoot Thee Mighty Caesars) within the Perfect Movers. The Prisoners’ long lasting influence could be detected in lots of of the afterwards Manchester rings of the first 90s, notably the Charlatans as well as the Inspiral Carpets and rugs, who also used the Hammond body organ to propel their quasi-psychedelic pop tracks. The Prisoners reunited briefly in 1997 to record a fresh single.
