British indie rock-band the Capes came together in Southern London at Goldsmiths University, where Kris Barratt (vocals/guitar) started rehearsing with Richard Gladman (keyboards/guitar), attracting Rupert Cresswell (bass) and auditioning several drummers before buying Rupert Phelps. This four-piece started playing out, afterwards adding Cresswell’s youthful sibling Nick Cresswell (electric guitar/keyboards) to finalize the lineup from the Capes being a quintet. In 2005, the Capes seduced the interest of American label Hard Spirit Information, which released their U.S. debut EP, Flavor (filled with previously released U.K. singles), on July 12. Advantageous radio interest and an appearance on the CMJ Music Marathon in NY in Sept prefaced a two-month U.S. tour, establishing the discharge from the band’s debut record, Hello, on Feb 28, 2006.
