Formed throughout the talents of Rodrigo Amarante (singer/guitarist from Brazilian indie rock and roll outfit Los Hermanos), Fabrizio Moretti (drummer for the Strokes), and Binki Shapiro (a Los Angeles-based singer), Small Joy found fruition after an opportunity encounter between Amarante and Moretti at a festival in Lisbon, Portugal. Moretti, Shapiro, and Amarante — the last mentioned acquired relocated to LA to seem on Devendra Banhart’s Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon record — eventually transferred into a home in L.A.’s historic Echo Recreation area (Little Pleasure stole their moniker from a cocktail lounge within taking walks distance from their house) and started hashing out music. The group’s eponymous Tough Trade debut found its way to late 2008.
