John Abercrombie

John Abercrombie’s tying collectively of jazz’s many threads produced him probably one of the most influential acoustic and electric powered guitarists from the 1970s and early ’80s; his recordings for ECM possess helped determine that label’s progressive chamber jazz status. Abercrombie’s delicate and lyrical design is noticed to best impact in small, romantic settings, using the repeating Gateway trio or as captured in duos with fellow guitarist Ralph Towner. Abercrombie stayed active because the 21st hundred years opened, releasing Kitty ‘n’ Mouse in 2002, Course Trip in 2004, A GOOD Idea (with pianist Andy LaVerne) in 2005, Buildings (documented with an individual mike) in 2006, and Third Quartet in 2007. Another quartet program appeared in the label in Oct of 2013. Entitled 39 Guidelines, its lineup included only one modification, as Copland changed Lovano. Uncharacteristically, he released Motivated, a collaborative placing with fellow guitarists Rale Micic, Peter Bernstein, and Lage Lund, for Artistshare in 2016, before time for ECM along with his regular quartet for Becoming more popular early another year.
