Hank Jones

The oldest from the Jones brothers, Hank Jones is a supreme accompanist and underrated soloist. He’s being among the most achieved sight visitors in jazz, and his versatility and sensitive design have held him extremely active cutting periods and employed in different groups and designs ranging from golf swing to bebop. He’s caused vocalists, performed in big rings and completed many single, trio, and combo schedules. Delivered in 1918 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Jones shifted with his family members towards the Detroit region while still a kid, and researched piano early, hearing carefully to Artwork Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Earl Hines, and Extra fat Waller. He started playing within the midwest at age group 13, and proved helpful in territory rings. Jones fulfilled Lucky Thompson in another of these groupings, and Thompson asked him to NY in 1944 to utilize Hot Lips Web page on the Onyx Membership. Jones worked for some time with John Kirby, Howard McGhee, Coleman Hawkins, Andy Kirk, and Billy Eckstine, after that started touring in 1947. He caused Jazz on the Philharmonic, after that followed Ella Fitzgerald from 1948 to 1953. Jones also lower many periods for Norman Granz’s brands in the past due ’40s and early ’50s, many with Charlie Parker. He proved helpful and documented within the ’50s with Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Lester Youthful, Milt Jackson, and Cannonball Adderley before signing up for CBS’ personnel in 1959. He done such programs because the Ed Sullivan Present and remained with CBS until they disbanded the personnel in 1976. He documented several periods with Savoy within the middle- and past due ’50s, using Donald Byrd, Herbie Mann, Wendell Marshall, and Kenny Clarke, amongst others. He also documented single and quartet schedules for Epic. His quartet with Osie Johnson, Barry Galbraith, and Milt Hinton became among New York’s busiest through the early ’60s, occasionally doing three schedules per day. They lower albums for Capitol and ABC in 1958, though Galbraith skipped the ABC periods. Jones continued documenting at Capitol, Argo, and Impulse in the first ’60s, sometimes dealing with his sibling Elvin. He produced a bunch of recordings within the ’70s. There have been solo schedules for Trio and Galaxy, and trio periods for User interface and Concord, amongst others within the ’70s. There have been duo times with Flanagan for Verve and Galaxy in the past due ’70s. Jones offered as pianist and conductor for the Broadway musical Ain’t Misbehavin in the past due ’70s. He also performed in the fantastic Jazz Trio, originally with Ron Carter and Tony Williams. (Buster Williams changed Carter around the trio’s 1st recording day.) Jones continuing using the trio in to the ’80s, though Eddie Gomez and Al Foster later on became his mates, and Jimmy Cobb changed Foster in 1982. The trio also supported Artwork Farmer, Benny Golson, and Nancy Wilson. Jones was the citizen pianist in the Cafe Ziegfeld in the first ’80s, and toured Japan with George Duvivier and Sonny Stitt. He held his documenting blitz entering the digital period. In 1989, he was called a Country wide Endowment for the Arts Jazz Grasp. In 2004, he was granted as an ASCAP Jazz Living Story; five years later on, he received a Country wide Medal of Arts; and in ’09 2009, Jones gained a Lifetime Accomplishment award in the Grammys. Twelve months later on, he died within the Bronx during hospice, just a couple weeks after coming back from performance times in Japan.
