David Black

As either David Dark or Dave Dark, this drummer was most widely known for a link with Duke Ellington that lasted between 1953 and 1955. Ahead of that, he rode his cymbals for most a soloist as the home drummer in the Blue Notice golf club in Philadelphia, burning Charlie Parker, amongst others. The flamboyant Friend Wealthy was Black’s primary man regardless of the huge difference in backgrounds — the superstar drummer was a self-taught drummer as a kid and never discovered to learn music, while Dark studied formally in the Mastbaum College of Music in Philadelphia. Both had been great soloists, but Dark evidently lacked his model’s ambition like a bandleader. “I wish to hear ‘Caravan’ having a drum single,” a popular heckle from an early on record from the Moms of Invention, was the truth is a contact to hands for Dark, who was frequently featured upon this tune during his Ellington years and ironically distributed last names using the drummer from the previous group. After departing Ellington, Dark stepped backward stylistically. He proved helpful quite frequently with Bob Scobey until the Dixieland bandleader’s loss of life from a coronary attack in 1963. The drummer continuing to execute and record, lately burning pianist and vocalist Si Perkoff. Dark also wrote agreements that were documented by bandleader and fellow drum showboat Louie Bellson. He passed away of pancreatic cancers on Dec 9, 2006, at age 78. He shouldn’t be confused using the Dave Dark who has created a lot more than 50 instructional guides for drums.
