Japanese kitsch-pop, nostalgic mixes of big music group, golf swing, and general quirkiness, was probably best conceived from the Pizzicato Five. Within their footsteps, though, arrived Ego-Wrappin’, several jazz and blues performers formed round the primary duo of guitarist Masaki Mora and vocalist Yoshie Nakano having a sheen of brass and randomness encircling them. As the Pizzicato Five reveled in sheer quirk, Ego-Wrappin’ possess always kept a solid grounding in appropriate jazz forms, and may go back to their primary designs at will. Though they released several albums within their early years, you start with 1998’s Blue Loudspeaker, they only accomplished wide acknowledgement with 2001’s Midnight Dejavu.
