House music group for Ken Kesey’s acidity celebrations, the Warlocks were the larval stage from the butterfly which became the Grateful Deceased. Jerry Garcia acquired already undergone many profession metamorphoses-as a folk/bluegrass enthusiast he’d performed stints using the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers, Hart Valley Drifters, Wildwood Children and Black Hill Boys–to name several. By July ’64, he, Bob Weir and Ron (Pigpen) McKernan-formerly of the next Tale Men–were playing jointly as Mom McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions on the Tangent in Palo Alto, CA. At McKernan’s insistence, Mom McCree’s “connected in” and by July ’65 had been executing as the (electrified) Warlocks. On November 3rd, with bassist Phil Lesh and drummer Costs Kreutzmann in tow, the Warlocks got into San Francisco’s Golden Gate Studios to record an LP for Fall Records tentatively entitled, “The Emergency Staff.” The Six music were focused on tape: I CANNOT DROP [2:59] ; Mindbender [2:39] ; The Just Time IS CURRENTLY [2:47] ; Extreme care (USUALLY DO NOT Stop OVER THE Monitors) [3:14] ; I UNDERSTAND You Rider [2:37] ; and MORNING HOURS Rainfall [3:14]. The program was hardly ever released, though bootlegged soundboard recordings possess circulated (e.g. Mason’s Kids). After Lesh stated he’d came across another band of musical “Warlocks,” the moniker was fell. With the brand new calendar year came a fresh name-the Grateful Deceased.
