Wally Rose

Wally Rose’s most well-known saving was “Monochrome Rag,” cut using the Yerba Buena Jazz Music group in 1941, among the first ragtime recordings and quite influential in launching a mini-ragtime revival. A significant player within the SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA jazz scene from the 1940s and 50s, Wally Rose was with Lu Watters’ Yerba Buena Jazz Band during its whole existence (1939-1950), and caused Bob Scobey (1951) and Turk Murphy (1952-1954) before having a profession mostly being a single pianist. He documented as a head for Jazz Guy (1941-1942), Good Period Jazz (many pieces including a 1958 LP), Columbia, along with a single time for Stomp Off in 1982 (his initial recording being a head in 24 years). Wally Rose was an inspirational body to youthful Dixielanders until his loss of life in early 1997.
