The Sullivan Family

The Sullivan Family members, a bluegrass/gospel group who’ve played extensively over the festival circuit, were known because of their distinctive, traveling beat as well as the robust singing of Margie Sullivan. The trio was founded by Enoch and Emmett Sullivan, both of whom had been blessed in the Tombigbee Valley in southern Alabama. The sons of the minister, the brothers was raised using a love of gospel music; in addition they enjoyed string-band music and had been influenced by Costs Monroe and Johnnie & Jack port. Born in north Louisiana, Margie also was raised influenced by the original bluegrass performers she noticed on the air. Furthermore to Monroe’s music, she was also inspired by such feminine performers as Wilma Lee Cooper and Molly O’Day. After touring with evangelist Hazel String, she fulfilled Enoch at a revival in 1949; they wedded and bought a plantation near St. Stephen, Alabama. As an organization, the Sullivans began playing in regional churches and appeared on an area radio place in Picayune, Mississippi. In 1950, they transferred to a place in Jackson, Alabama and six years afterwards transferred to Thomasville. In 1959, they produced their documenting debut for Revival and afterwards that year had been befriended by Walter Bailes, on whose Loyal Information they recorded for quite some time. The Sullivans mainly performed at churches, on tv, and on radio. Longtime close friends of Costs Monroe, the Sullivans started playing at his different bluegrass celebrations in 1968 and quickly gained a complete new following. Over time, the band offers included other family, including dad Arthur, uncle Jerry, and Margie’s youngest girl Lisa. The music group continued to execute and record on different American and Canadian brands through the ’80s up to the middle-’90s.
