The Only Ones

Longview, Texas garage area combo the Only Types was formed in mid-1965 by vocalist/bassist Jim Axberg, his sibling drummer John, and guitarists Steve Thornton and Randy Clendenen. Previously dubbed “the Proportions,” the group performed only a small number of gigs before Clendenen exited to create the Noticed, famed because of their garage-psych cult traditional “Leave 9.” He was changed by organist Brenda Seale, among the lone ladies in the usually male-dominated garage picture. Off their inception, the Just Ones constructed their very own original materials, and in the summertime of 1966 released their debut one “Another Place” — offering the Axberg brothers on co-lead vocals; the protest anthem was supported with the snarling “Can’t Trust a female,” which highlighted Thornton on lead.
