Among the best drummers from the 1920s, Ruler was greatly popular for 15 years before alcoholism slowed up his profession. He transferred to NY in 1920 and produced many recordings using the California Ramblers (1922-1926). Ruler played and documented using the who’s-who of white big-band dance/jazz music including Roger Wolfe Kahn, Jean Goldkette, Paul Whiteman, Bert Lown (1929-1931), as well as the Dorsey Brothers. He also made an appearance on many small-group jazz information (although he hardly ever led any schedules of his very own). In the ’30s Ruler became an extremely busy studio room musician. The drummer used an early edition from the Benny Goodman Orchestra (1934), Joe Haymes, the Three T’s (1936), and Bob Zurke (1939-1940), amongst others. However, he largely died out in the ’40s (playing a low-profile work with Chauncey Grey’s Music group), and was mainly forgotten by enough time he passed on, but Stan Ruler can be noticed on many classic recordings where his light drumming noises quite fresh.
