THE UK was an unlikely spot to get rappers in the past due ’80s. Merlin (of Jamaican descent) was created and elevated in South London’s Brixton. At 11, he sang and performed inside a funky chapel which used drum devices and synthesizers to augment the original body organ and piano. The English label released Given birth to Free of charge, and Merlin effectively collaborated with regional rappers including Bomb and S’Express for most chart strikes.
