Memphis Sanctified Singers

Led by Bessie Johnson and in addition offering Melinda Taylor and Sally Sumler, the Memphis Sanctified Performers recorded several edges for Victor through the past due ’20s. Though a lot of their edges had been released as Bessie Johnson & Her Sanctified Performers, Harry Smith’s well-known 1952 folksong compendium Anthology of American Folk Music outlined the group as the Memphis Sanctified Performers. All six edges recorded with the group show up on the Record collection Memphis Gospel: Full Works (1927-1929). In addition they appeared on many recordings with the Elders McIntorsh and Edwards’ Sanctified Performers (also featured on a single compilation).
