Jerry Bergonzi

An excellent, high-powered tenor saxophonist having a tone influenced by John Coltrane, a mastery of chord adjustments, and a solid musical creativity, Jerry Bergonzi has very long had an underground following within the Boston area. He began on clarinet when he was eight, switching to alto at 12, and lastly to tenor 2 yrs later on. Bergonzi was influenced in early stages by Sonny Rollins, Coltrane, and Hank Mobley. He went to Lowell University and after graduation performed electrical bass in regional bands behind performers and strippers, conserving up enough cash to go to NY in 1972. After battling in ny for seven years and attaining some identification as an associate of Two Years of Brubeck and of the Dave Brubeck Quartet (with whom he made an appearance on many Concord albums during 1979-1981), Bergonzi transferred back again to Boston in 1981, where he created a strong profession both being a tenorman so when an educator. He provides since led many groupings (including two known as Con Brio and Gonz) and documented for the Plug, Not really Fat, Crimson, and Blue Be aware labels.
