Hugues Pannassie

While he was an essential jazz critic in the 1930s, Hugues Panassie’s fiery responses and inability to identify bebop being a logical stage beyond golf swing made him seem to be quite reactionary with the later ’40s and hurt his longtime popularity. Panassie began authoring jazz around 1930 and in 1932 helped discovered the Hot Membership of France along with his friend Charles Delauney. His pioneering 1934 function Le Jazz Sizzling hot was one of the primary critical books on jazz, although he amended a lot of his tips (like the disregard of Duke Ellington) in 1942’s THE TRUE Jazz.
