Frédéric Nicolas Duvernoy

The primary French horn player of his time, this teacher and composer was a favorite of Napoleon, appointed the first horn for the imperial chapel, and retained this position through the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X. Duvernoy, sidetracked by the thought of two horn divisions — cor alto, cor basse (alto horn and bass horn) — produced another category the “cor mixte”. He had written a practical information for playing the horn “Methode put le cor”. Compositions by Duvernoy included many solos for his device — some with piano accompaniment — concertos, dual concertos, duets and trios.
