Freddie Moore

Freddie Moore certainly had an extended career. He began playing drums when he was 12 in 1912 and was still energetic 80 years afterwards. Moore started his profession playing in journeying displays and he found much encounter in variety displays and on vaudeville. He was with Charlie Creath in 1927 in St. Louis, led his personal music group in Detroit, documented with Ruler Oliver from 1929-30 and performed in NY with Wilbur Sweatman from 1928-31. Moore toured with Oliver from 1931-32, led a trio also including Pete Dark brown and Don Frye from 1933-37 and freelanced numerous top players through the next twenty years including John Kirby, Artwork Hodes, Sidney Bechet, Bob Wilber and Conrad Janis. The drummer was with Wilbur DeParis’ New New Orleans Jazz Music group from 1952-54, performed in European countries with Mezz Mezzrow from 1954-55 and experienced organizations with Sammy Cost, Tony Parenti as well as Roy Eldridge in 1971. Through the 1980s and in to the ’90s, Moore remained active, using various rings in the brand new York area and frequently doubling on washboard. He was a vibrant performer, frequently mugging and adding showbiz results towards the music. Moore, who made an appearance on the Rahsaan Roland Kirk record playing “Nice Georgia Dark brown,” led his just record day for the brand new York Jazz label in 1981.
