Caroline LaVelle’s 1995 debut Soul elicited instant evaluations to Enya because of its mix of breathy vocals, pop track constructions, and glistening, modern, electronic-tinged plans. That comparison, regrettably, may scare off some listeners who like LaVelle. Her music is usually a lot more somber, and less likely to fairytale, mythic atmosphere. Her voice, as well, is much deeper and much more reserved, eschewing the pristine preciousness of Enya that some discover too cloying. Ahead of her debut, the English musician worked regularly like a program musician, playing cello on information by alternative-leaning functions like Modern British, Ultra Vivid Picture, Siouxsie & the Banshees, the Cranberries, the Waterboys, Peter Gabriel, and Pale Saints, in addition to traditional Irish performers De Danann and Nigel Kennedy. She also captured the eye of digital/ambient designer William Orbit after guesting on the track with Substantial Assault. Orbit also functioned as a significant collaborator on Soul, co-writing a number of the tunes with LaVelle, and assisting to devise the mix of digital and organic noises from the album’s plans as producer.
