Bap

A German institution, the rock-band Bap were shaped in 1976 from the Cologne-based singer/songwriter/activist Wolfgang Niedecken. Niedecken had been well-known as Cologne’s response to Bob Dylan before he started Bap, partly due to his classical guitar and harmonica, but mainly due to his poignant, socially conscious lyrics. Hearing the Rolling Rocks as well as the Kinks affected him to create a music group. He called the music group Bap after a nickname he had taken in order to avoid using his father’s surname. Niedecken’s turbulent romantic relationship with his dad lasted until his dad was on his deathbed. Their bittersweet reconciliation would end up being the subject of Bap’s determining melody, “Verdamp Lang Her,” a staple from the group’s live established that highlighted a Bruce Springsteen-styled monologue that could change just a little each night.
