The first history of the Trolleyvox began once the multitalented guitar pop maven Andrew Chalfen (Wishniaks, Gimme, Joey Sweeney) recorded demos in 1993-95 with guitarist-vocalist Dave Gray (Idlewilds, Vegas Nerve) and engineer Adam Lasus (Helium, Madder Rose). After that Beth Filla responded to a 1996 “vocalist wished” advertisement that Chalfen experienced placed in an area Philadelphia paper. Chalfen suspected she was a witch because she smelled of burnt timber and spices from a pagan wedding ceremony, but she impressed him with her smoky rendition from the Byrds’ “Everyone’s Been Burnt,” and a range from an Italian aria. Chalfen and Filla do some acoustic gigs jointly and teamed up with Lasus, Grey, and drummer Ken Buono (Air travel of Mavis, Hype Zeemer, Dragstrip Courage) to start out recording basic monitors in 1997.
