Tommy Newsom

Tommy Newsom is most beneficial known for his using within the Tonight Present Band from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, where he occasionally was the butt of jokes as Doc Severinsen’s dim-witted sidekick. Newsom was generally good-humored about any of it all, but this specific “gig” protected up the actual fact that he was in fact a fairly talented tenor saxophone soloist. Besides using the Airmen of Take note during his four years in the Surroundings Force, Newsom examined on the Peabody Conservatory and Columbia School Teachers University, where he gained a master’s level. He spent the 1950s mainly as a studio room musician although his playing on the Charlie Byrd Savoy time from the past due ’50s uncovered that he was a solid stylist from the Zoot Sims college. Newsom was on Benny Goodman’s tour of Latin America (1961) as well as the Soviet Union (1962), and he documented with Ruby Braff in 1961. In 1963 he became a member of the Tonight Display Music group, where he remained for pretty much 30 years, until Johnny Carson’s pension. Newsom on an intermittent basis freelanced and made an appearance at traditional jazz celebrations, and in the years after departing the Carson display, he continuing to record. Newsom led an obscure program for Direct Disk Labs in 1978 using the Tonight Display Orchestra and in 1990 cut a Laserlight Compact disc along with his “Television Jazz Celebrities.” In 2007 Newsom passed away of tumor at his house in Portsmouth, VA, at age group 78.
