Chicago noise pop quartet the M’s shaped in the summertime of 2000. Vocalist/guitarist Josh Chicoine, past due of regional jam music group Jamestown, initial collaborated with drummer Steve Versaw within the short-lived psych pop clothing Sanoponic, and from then on task dissolved, Versaw transferred in with vocalist/bassist Joey Ruler (his onetime bandmate within the Kalamazoo-based Ordination of Aaron) and vocalist/guitarist Robert Hicks. The four music artists became regular collaborators, creating a house studio and frequently recording original materials; once the Chicago membership Martyrs approached Chicoine in the expectations of reservation the now-defunct Sanoponic, he recognized the give, convincing Versaw, Ruler, and Hicks to try out the shows rather. The M’s produced their live debut in July 2001, and their smart, melodic strategy quickly earned a solid local pursuing; they self-released an eponymous EP the next February, immediately after reissued with the Brilliante label by adding two new monitors. Initial plans needed Brilliante release a two even more EPs, but all of the material was rather culled together to generate the M’s’ debut full-length, a self-titled work issued within the springtime of 2004.
