Rufus Kasey was created in 1918 in Huddleston, VA (Bedford Region), where his family had lived for a number of generations. He started playing banjo when he was eight, creating a drop-thumb clawhammer design on his aged resonator-backed Kay, which he applied to the unique edition of “Coo Coo Parrot” that shows up on Dark Banjo Songsters of NEW YORK and Virginia, a assortment of field recordings released by Smithsonian/Folkways in 1998.
