Maria Karnilova

Tony Award champion Maria Karnilova was created in 1920 in Hartford, CT, to Russian immigrant parents. As a young child, Karnilova used ballet and dance, and by age group 7 was dance at folk celebrations, before learning to be a student in the ballet college from the Metropolitan Opera. After showing up in ballets by Antony Tudor, Michel Fokine, and Agnes de Mille (and learning to be a charter person in the American Ballet Theater when it started in 1939, where she started dealing with choreographer Jerome Robbins), Karnilova started showing up in musicals through the ’30s.
