Laconic Chamber

Laconic Chamber, as the name might indicate, plays music that is clearly a combination of chamber music and post-rock. Constructed around the music and vocals of Dorothy Geller, their audio is somewhat equivalent compared to that of Mazzy Superstar in how its slow tempos, drones, and whispery feminine vocals create a feeling of depressing however seductive torpor. Laconic Chamber differs from Mazzy Superstar, however, for the reason that they don’t really feature quasi-psychedelic electric guitar distortion within their agreements, rather building their agreements around even more classical-chamber-influenced elements. The violin of Adam Wolf is highlighted prominently, although they’re still a rock-band with a power guitar and tempo section. Like Mazzy Superstar plus some slowcore or sadcore rings, the languorous drone, dark obtuse melodies, hazy half-obscured lyrics, and general feeling of foreboding results in an atmosphere ideal for brooding or, even more bluntly, nodding off to. After adding a monitor (“Ink-Blots”) to a 7″ compilation on the neighborhood Washington, D.C., indie Nightshade, they released their first recording, A BRIEF HISTORY of Epidemics, within the Australian Video camera Obscura label in 2000.
