Jimmy Garrison

Garrison is most beneficial referred to as bassist for just one of the very most important jazz groupings, John Coltrane’s common quartet with drummer Elvin Jones and pianist McCoy Tyner. But Garrison acquired a full profession backing various other prominent saxophonists, including Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, and Ornette Coleman. His propulsive feeling of time by no means failed, and his empathy with those experimenting him was total. Garrison was raised in Philadelphia, where he discovered to try out bass. Garrison arrived of age amid a flourishing Philadelphia jazz picture that included Tyner, fellow bassists Reggie Workman and Henry Grimes, and trumpeter Lee Morgan. Between 1957 and 1960, Garrison performed and documented with trumpeter Kenny Dorham; clarinetist Tony Scott; drummer Philly Joe Jones; and saxophonists Expenses Barron, Lee Konitz, and Jackie McLean, amongst others. His 1st record with Coleman was Artwork from the Improvisers (Atlantic, 1959). In 1960, he produced My Favorite Points (Atlantic) with Coltrane. He continuing to try out with Coleman as well as others — Cal Massey, Walter Bishop, Jr., and Dorham, to mention several — but by 1962 his work with Coltrane experienced essentially become full-time. Garrison continued to be with Coltrane before saxophonist’s loss of life in July 1967. The Olatunji Concert: THE FINAL Live Documenting (Impulse!, 2001), a live saving created by Coltrane just a few months just before his loss of life, includes Garrison with Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Rashied Ali, and Jumma Santos. After Coltrane, Garrison caused Ornette Coleman once more, and performed on record times led by Sanders, Jones, Shepp, Sonny Rollins, and Alice Coltrane. Garrison also trained sometimes; William Parker, probably one of the most respectable bassists from the past due ’90s and early 2000s, was his pupil.
