J.K. & Co.

The annals of J.K. & Co. was small known, the facts etched in admirably by Sundazed’s Compact disc reissue of their just record. The group was led by Jay Kaye, who was simply just 15 when he constructed J.K. & Co. in early 1968. With the help of arranger Robert Buckley (also still in his teenagers), manufacturer Robin Spurgin, and program musicians, he documented a little-known record, Suddenly One Summertime, for Light Whale in Vancouver (to where he previously briefly relocated from NEVADA). His florid, melodic songwriting betrayed apparent bad debts to Donovan and George Harrison; his low-key vocals also remember George’s past due Beatle initiatives. The sappier excesses of his lyrics haven’t dated well, but his relaxing preparations (with low-key organs and saxes), beguiling melodies, and good-hearted, meditative atmosphere make him among the worthier obscurities from the past due ’60s. Being a music group, J.K. & Co. didn’t actually exist until following the recording was finished, and Kaye created a group to try out the materials live that included his cousin John Kaye on bass. Even though LP got a small amount of publicity on Californian underground r / c, it was not really well-promoted and continues to be barely known, actually by many psych-heads. Their profession was not along with the label’s bizarre decision to draw a 36-second-long monitor, the instrumental introductory piece “Break of Dawn,” as the solitary. While they do play reside in California, they split up around the finish from the 1960s, without liberating any longer recordings. The uncommon recording was reissued on Compact disc by Sundazed/BeatRocket in 2001.
