Rocket or Chiritori

Satoko Shibahara’s result was slim in every respect. Between the age groups of 15 and 17, she documented a small number of lo-fi tweedlings and soundpieces as Rocket or Chiritori. A Japanese label Cardinal Information released two mini-LPs and two singles in 1997. San Francisco’s Paris Caramel added a 7″ the next yr. Collectively, these albums time clock in at only under one hour. Twenty roughly unguarded melodies, performed on classical guitar and plaything keytar or sung or both, are dashed with slack drums, windy bleeps, and analog examples. That was all there’d become. By 1999, Shibahara got abandoned Rocket or Chiritori to spotlight college. The demo-caliber paperwork left behind provide as proof that from the past due-’90s the D.We.Con. ethos of punk, C-86, and Calvin Johnson’s K Information got reached beyond Tokyo’s Shibuya picture into the sleeping rooms of typical Japanese teenagers. Also, for almost all their slightness the music themselves operate amazingly well. “Fifteen Appreciate” and “Holiday” — the singles from the Appreciate Eye LP released in Dec 1997 — are appealing for just about any indie pop enthusiast with an inclination toward the obscure. Darla Information included a far more refined Japanese-vocals edition of “Holiday” on its 1998 compilation Small Darla Includes a Treat for you personally, Vol. 9. Some of Shibahara’s sonic sketches are even more forward-looking. “MANY THANKS,” from early 1997’s Tokyo Youthful Winner, opens using a disarming tape collage: guitars crashing to a cheering market, answering-machine shades, high-pitched orchestral scraps, and lastly what appears like an English-language teaching instruction. The guide’s underage loudspeaker procedures adjectives, “I’d like many dresses, I’d like much cash,” as Shibahara’s “la la la’s” float past. “MANY THANKS,” like Rocket or Chiritori, has ended before very long.
