Fernando Girao

His dad a well known fado guitarist (Fernando de Freitas was involved with Amalia Rodrigues’ initial recordings) and his mom a Bahian vocalist, Fernando Girao has largely taken a middle street through Portuguese music, creating new avenues instead of using the established types. Shifting to Portugal at 17, Girao shaped and/or joined some influential rock and roll rings: Pentagono, Abralas, and Large Music group, (with whom he spent three years absorbing African affects from the various other main Portuguese colony, Angola), and a stint in conjunction with Jorge Palma for Portugal’s admittance in to the 1975 Eurovision competition. Time for Portugal, Girao released his initial single albums, and Portugal’s initial independent produces, Brothers of sunlight and Discretamente. After a stint under arrest with the Estado Novo routine, Girao spent amount of time in France, Brazil, and Spain collecting jazz and rock and roll sounds. A significant strike with Intelectual perform Café in 1982 led further to even more ethnic affects with African in 1987 and Indian in 1989. Some collaborations followed through the entire 90s, and a significant anthology in 2003.
