Fantasma

Fantasma is a South African collective that manically grafts together hip-hop, Zulu maskandi music, shangaan electro, psych, South African home, and punk. Founded in 2013 by rapper/manufacturer/vocalist Spoek Mathambo, he enlisted DJ Spoko (the godfather of “Bacardi home”), guitarist André Geldenhuys (Machineri), veteran multi-instrumentalist Bekisenzo Joseph Cele (Vukazithathe NeziNgane ZaKhe) and drummer Michael Buchanan. After live performances within their homeland’s townships, Fantasma performed some dates in Britain in 2014 where they documented their EP, Eyes of sunlight, for Soundway. The documenting was received with near general acclaim. Over time of intense touring, they came back to the studio room later that calendar year. Free Like, Fantasma’s debut full-length, premiered in the springtime of 2015.
