Among the better sociopolitical rappers from the later ’80s and early ’90s, Def Jef (given birth to Jeffrey Forston) released a fantastic debut (1989’s Only a Poet With Spirit) along with a mildly disappointing follow-up (1991’s Spirit Food) prior to going into creation.
