Charlie Holmes was among the finest alto-saxophonists from the past due 1920’s/early 30’s period, particularly if he was good presented with Luis Russell’s Orchestra. An early on affiliate of both Harry Carney and Johnny Hodges (both of whom had been boyhood close friends), Holmes was a theoretically skilled instrumentalist in early stages, playing oboe using the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra in 1926. He relocated to NY in 1927, experienced short stints with Chick Webb, Henri Saparo, Joe Steele and George Howe and in 1928 1st became a member of Luis Russell. He previously second stints with Saparo and Steele before time for Russell in 1929. Through the next 3 years, Holmes was among four main soloists (alongside Henry “Crimson” Allen, J.C. Higginbotham and Albert Nicholas) who starred with Luis Russell’s amazing orchestra. He following used Mills Blue Tempo Music group in 1932 and rejoined Russell quickly before the music group became Louis Armstrong’s backup group. Departing Armstrong in 1940, Holmes caused Bobby Burnet briefly in 1941, was with Cootie Williams’ Orchestra (1942-45), caused the John Kirby Sextet (1947) and Billy Kyle, documented with Al Sears in 1951 and left music for pretty much 20 years, functioning at a time jo In his old age, Holmes re-emerged sounding great within an unchanged design during performances with Clyde Bernhardt’s Harlem Blues & Jazz music group (1972-75) and documenting using the Swedish music group Kustbandet (1975).
