New York Art Quartet

The short-lived NY Art Quartet was made up of trombonist Roswell Rudd, altoist John Tchicai, drummer Milford Graves (succeeded by Louis Moholo) and many different bass players including Lewis Worrell, Reggie Workman and Finn Von Eyben. Their music was pretty free, psychological, and quite significant for the trombone-alto frontline. The group was created after Tchicaideparted from THE BRAND NEW York Modern Five, and the brand new York Artwork Quartet lasted until Rudd became a member of Archie Shepp’s Quartet. THE BRAND NEW York Artwork Quartet documented three albums from 1964-65: one apiece for ESP, Fontana and America.
