When Prince split up the Trend in 1986, guitarist Wendy Melvoin and keyboardist Lisa Coleman, close friends since childhood, made a decision to synergy for a fresh musical project. Both had developed together in LA, where both of their fathers had been session music artists and inspired their musical advancement from a age. Coleman became a member of the Trend in 1979 for Dirty Brain, and Melvoin agreed upon on in 1984; furthermore with their instrumental abilities, both also provided a few of Prince’s agreements. Wendy and Lisa performed the vast majority of the musical instruments on the self-titled debut and co-wrote a lot of the materials with ex-Revolution drummer Bobby Z. After support Joni Mitchell on Chalk Tag within a Rainstorm in 1988, the duo added Melvoin’s twin sister Susannah and documented Fruit in the bottom, a song routine in regards to the good and the bad of romance.
