Staffordshire, England’s Unisex shaped through the ashes from the Telescopes, among the sadly forgotten rings who recorded a small number of okay early-’90s EPs for Creation Information. The U.K. label’s right now decimated ranks at once presented Oasis, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, Trip, as well as the Jesus & Mary String, merely to name several; one can observe how easy it might be to obtain overlooked in such heady firm. Original Telescopers and today co-leaders of Unisex, Stephen Lawrie and Jo Doran originally emerged jointly in 1996 after Lawrie, Doran, and film music composer Nick Hemming documented soundtrack music for the low-budget U.K. film, AN AREA for Romeo Brass, directed by Shane Meadows. The trio appreciated making music jointly and continuing to record, adding Andrew Foster and Dan Thompson on the way. The group’s initial single, “THEY ACTUALLY Feel Unusual,” made an appearance in 1996 on Heaven Information U.K.; it had been called “Single of the entire year” by Pop (France). Following vinyl singles implemented on a number of brands, including Heaven, Kooky, Brief Fuse, Mind Extension, and the tiny U.S. unbiased Twice Agent. Another one, “Vital Condition,” was called “Single from the Week” with the U.K.’s New Music Express. An EP, Deadlock, was released in 2000. The group’s initial full-length record, Stratosphere, premiered by Increase Agent in 2001. The group’s following album (credited in 2002) will apparently feature all five associates of Unisex alongside Randall Nieman (Füxa, Unexplained Transmissions).
