THE OCEAN and Cake certainly are a post-rock supergroup of sorts, made up of luminaries through the Chicago independent scene. The music group can be led by vocalist/guitarist Sam Prekop, who, alongside bassist Eric Claridge, was an alumnus from the often brilliant Shrimp Fishing boat. From then on group’s dissolution, Prekop and Claridge had been offered the chance to go on a brand-new task and hastily recruited ex-Coctails guitarist Archer Prewitt and Tortoise drummer John McEntire before getting into the studio room. Originally intended being a one-off task, the musicians made a decision to continue executing jointly, and after choosing the name the ocean and Wedding cake — produced from McEntire’s misinterpretation from the Gastr del Sol tune “The C in Wedding cake” — they released their eponymous 1994 debut, an enigmatic collection highlighting Prekop’s stream-of-consciousness wordplay and singular fusion of pop, jazz, blue-eyed spirit, and Krautrock designs. In 1995, the group came back with two even more LPs, the complex Nassau as well as the shimmering The Biz. Following the release from the Fawn in 1997, the music group took a rest while both Prewitt and Prekop released single albums. Finally, in 2000, the ocean and Wedding cake released their 5th album, Oui, adopted three years later on from the delivery of the most elegant recording however, One Bedroom. By this aspect, the group’s repertoire experienced swelled to add African-inspired riffs, Brazilian affects, and guitar-based indie pop, plus they strike a wellspring of creativeness as the 10 years wound to some close.
