Acquiring his moniker through the Bernardo Bertolucci film epic of the same name, this West Philadelphia native continues to be an underground hip-hop mover and shaker because the mid-’90s. Having went to Overbrook Great, Philadelphia’s very own hip-hop high, which noticed famous brands Great C, Steady B, and the new Prince go through its hallowed halls, Last Emp became a B-Boy by osmosis not only is it a wizard in the class. After graduating from the country’s first historically dark college (Lincoln College or university), Emp got his work to NY, where he captured on with storied Lyricist Lounge. Emperor’s initial on-wax knowledge was a substantial one, showing up alongside KRS-One and Trend Contrary to the Machine’s Zach de la Rocha for the cut “C.We.A.” from 1998’s Lyricist Lounge, Vol. 1. Having offered see to his scholastic road skill, Emperor strike the street to polish up his on-stage efficiency, occasionally showing up on combine tapes and 12″s every once in awhile. Having stirred the underground right into a frenzy with rumours of the debut record, in early 2000 formal word emerged that Emp got signed with 3rd party kingpin label Rawkus. Distribution complications, however, held the record from the racks.
