While Anything Package seeks for the dancefloor using the blithe synth pop of Erasure and early Depeche Setting, the Journal summons the spirits of gothic-rock royalty: Pleasure Division, the Treatment, and Bauhaus. Eschewing Anything Box’s crush on sprightly keyboards and bouncy melodies, the Journal expresses bitterness and heartache with sullen guitars and slower, even more introspective beats. Claude S. began recording because the Journal after Anything Box’s 1993 tour. Claude S. performed every device on Web page One, released on Anything Box’s personal label Orangewerks in 1995. A glum, depressing recording, Page One’s just similarity to Anything Box’s earlier work can be Claude S.’ coy vocals. Although a stylistic departure from Claude S.’ previously materials, the Diary’s remake of Pleasure Division’s “Like Will Rip Us Aside” actually provides links to Anything Box’s former. In 1988, Anything Container covered exactly the same monitor on a demonstration tape. Web page One didn’t have the enthusiast support of Anything Box’s information; the record snatched the eye of Claude S.’ devoted followers, nonetheless it was as well dour for radio airplay or mass intake.
