Sonna

An indie rock-band from Baltimore, Maryland, Sonna were founded in 1998 by guitarist/vocalist Chris Mackie, drummer/guitarist Jim Redd, and bassist Paul Petersan. Guitarist Jeremy DeVine, who set up the Temporary Home label in 1996, became a member of immediately after the group’s development. Since a lot of Sonna’s materials was instrumental, these were frequently grouped as post-rock, however they generally preserved a melodic sensibility and a penchant for experimentation and subtly complicated arrangements. Sonna produced their debut in 1999 with three-song EP These Home windows Are Pistons, and a divide 7″ single using the music group Paul Newman, where both groupings performed assumes a song entitled “Method to Breathe No Breathing.” In 2000, Sonna (today including bassist Drew Nelson instead of Petersan, who relocated to Tx) added The Eventual Bow to Brief Residence’s EP series Moves in Constants. The group also released the 7″ one Kept Luminesce/Mirameko on Static Caravan. Sonna documented their debut full-length, We Sing Loud Sing Soft Tonight, with Steve Albini at his Electrical Sound Studios. The record premiered in 2001 to vital acclaim. In 2002, Short lived Home reissued Sonna’s away from print out Static Caravan 7″ on Compact disc, as well as the EP Make Change Carousel also made an appearance. The last mentioned was a cooperation with electronic performers Sybarite and Lilienthal; Sonna documented raw acoustic paths that were after that remixed and put into by others. They toured continuously during this time period, writing the stage with performers such as for example Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Tarentel (for whom drummer Redd also performed), and Explosions in the Sky. In the meantime, DeVine became a member of the English music group Refrigerator as their touring guitarist. In early 2003, Sonna released the Albini-recorded Smile as well as the Globe Smiles together with you. By this time around, fifty percent of the music group had relocated from Baltimore — DeVine to Portland and Reid to SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA — and Sonna became inactive. Every one of the group’s non-album recordings (apart from Make Change Carousel) were put together around the 2016 double-LP Maintain It Together.
